The electric came on last night at around 8 pm. My kid went screaming through the house, followed by the cheers of the neighbors down the street. You could feel the excitement in the air.

I have to admit, it was kind of a let down.

We had been to Kingston earlier that day and spent an hour in the Starbucks, charging our phones and checking in on the interwebs. We got 75 lbs of ice and had just re-cleaned and re-packed the fridge. The grill was lit, and the coals almost ready for the chicken that had just thawed to perfection. We had just gtten the hot water heater in the cabin working, and taken showers.

Suddenly the sound of the generators in the neighboring yards was replaced by the fan that was running in the bedroom when the lights went out a few days ago.

Everything back to “normal.”

Irene was nothing for me. Really. On Sunday morning, our neighbors lent us their Coleman stove, so we were cooking with gas. We had running water being on the town water line. We were good.

But in the neighboring hill station towns, everything is absolutely not back to “normal” at all. People homeless, hungry, lonely, wet… wet… wet…

I keep being brought back to India with this one… I want to go back so bad.

In the Evenings it was normal for the electric to go out. Usually around 6:30 or 7:00. Just around dinner time.

You get used to it.

Ya just do.
